LRCO Update: Sachem Budget

If you weren’t at the last civic meeting, you missed an update on the Sachem School District budget. Jeff Kagan, civic treasurer, attended the last school board meeting and provided the following summary:

The Sachem School Board has tentatively agreed to a budget that will result in a 1.99% property tax rate increase. The approval is tentative because the State budget and school aid amount is not yet final. The 1.99% property tax rate increase technically pierces the State tax cap and will therefore require a 60% approval rate in the district-wide budget vote. If there is no change in state aid, the level of services will be the same as in the current school year, but for the previously approved closure of two elementary schools and one middle school. If state aid increases, the Board will have the opportunity to revisit the level of services. Note that the State budget deadline is April 1st so this should be resolved shortly, if the State acts on time.
