LRCO Update: Town of Brookhaven Info

If you weren’t at the last civic meeting, you missed an update on Town of Brookhaven issues. Jeff Kagan, civic treasurer, attended the last town board meeting and provided the following updates:

1. Councilmen LaValle and Foley, who together represent the LRCO community, have indicated that we should see more local paving in 2016 and 2017. Hawkins Avenue, which spans both council districts, will be paved in 2016 in conjunction with the downtown revitalization project. Councilman LaValle stated that additional streets will be paved in his district in 2016. These should include the South Howell and Crestwood Lane area. Councilman Foley advised that he is working off of the civic’s submitted street list and it has been submitted to the Town Highway Department.

The civic will continue to provide updates on progress towards getting adequate attention to our community’s streets.

2. Numerous people spoke at the Town Board meeting in support of Caithness II. Caithness II is a proposed 750 megawatt power plant to be located in Yaphank nearby the existing Caithness I power plant. PSE&G recently reported that projected demand on Long Island does not support Caithness II and the project was set aside. The Town stated that it is not on the Town decision calendar and that the Town had already given all requisite approvals. The speakers advised that they were requesting action by the Town Board as individuals in support of this project. There are many issues related to energy needs and the future of Long Island. While these were not discussed at the meeting, this is a high-stakes issue and is should heat up considerably in the near future.
